Pinching the tips of broad beans
« on: April 14, 2008, 11:37 »
In my book it says to pinch out the tip of the broad bean plant when the first bean pods appear.

I've got lots of little (teeny weeny) things which look like bean pods, but with a tiny flower forming at the end.

I (stupidly) have pinched out the tips of about half my plants, before realising that they've probably got to flower and be pollinated before the bean pods appear. Am i right?

And will i have killed them?
Trying to live the good life.. getting there slooooowly...

Depends how big the plants are.
The idea of pinching out the tips I believe is to stop blackfly which tend favour the tender growing tips then spread down to the rest of the plant.
Dont think you'll get blackfly till its much warmer so no need to bother yet.
I usually dont pinch out tops at all unless or untill I see signs of blackfly, then pinch out tips on all the plants.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"
