Any tips for novice nancy
« on: April 13, 2008, 18:53 »
Hi everyone,  found this site by accident.  I have never been a member of a forum before so here goes.................   Got my allotment 2 weeks ago. 45 years old and I have wanted one for years, but job, children, hubby etc stopped me.  Thrilled to bits with my patch.  I am aching but happy!!  I am not a complete novice at gardening; just veg and fruit.   Planted some onions today.  The packet said to plant them an inch deep which I did, but the chap next to me just has his resting on the surface of the earth.  Any help chaps?
Novice Nancy

Hi Nancy & welcome.

I NEVER leave my onions on the surface as it's too much of a temptation for the birds. They love pulling them up by the stalks & throwing them around. They possibly think they are worms poking though!

In my opinion, you've done the right thing.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

had chickens when we were younger.  I would love some but our Council doesn't allow it on the allotment - already checked. Thanks for the tip on the onions.  Now for raspberries - is it too late to plant them for autumn and any tips on planting?

No should just about be OK. Trench 3" deep, spread roots out, plants 18" apart. PM me if you would like some plants.

Hi and welcome to the forums novice nancy  :D  don't listen to babe you dont HAVE to keep chickens she's just of the leader in the chicken world domination party

And no Babe you don't have to hug them or name them ( no names means you can eat 'em )

Plenty of organic matter incorporated in the soil for raspberries, I'd not let them fruit this year to be honest let them put their energy into good root growth. And mulch in the summer to help preserve water.
