Tomato cuttings
« on: November 29, 2006, 22:54 »
I took some side shoots off my tomato plants put them in a plant pot and they seem to have taken.  I thought I would put them in the propagator when it gets cold and perhaps make an early start to the new growing year.  Has anyone else done this?  What was the outcome,is it worth doing?

Thanks

Margaret

Not at this time of the year, so sorry can't help there. Just wanted to say that a lot of folk don't realise how easy it is to take tomato cuttings from these side shoots. (At least the folk down our site don't).

I think I propagated & gave away about 36 more plants this way last year. (That shows you how remiss I was at taking the side shoots out before they got too big!!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Warmth is one thing but daylight is the other - down in Spain I don't think it varies as much as it does in the UK but tomatoes like lots of sunlight.
Growlights will compensate but they're hardly cheap (or ecologically sound, I suppose)
