Scrape 'em out, rub off the gunge & put them on a kitchen towel to dry.

Plant 'em, grow 'em, harvest 'em, cut 'em open & repeat until bored!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you know what country?
How many seed have you got?

If there's quite a lot, then you could try some this year & leave the rest 'till next.

I grew some great plants from a butternut bought from the supermarket last year.  Just stuck them in some compost and away they went.  Unfortunately the weather made them rot but had the summer been drier they would have grown like triffids.  Got a couple of edible squashes though.  From my experience, if we have a better summer, they will need a lot of room.
Cheese makes everything better.

Great - thanks everyone.
I just cleaned them up and laid them out to dry a little bit.
There's over 100 seeds there and it was a fairly small butternut.

the slimy stuff will dry off if you put them on kitchen paper.  Normally you'd store them til ready for sowing but you'll be ready to go with them soon, end of the month I'd say. Sow the seeds on their side so I read somewhere today

Good luck

Yes, definitely plant the seeds on their sides and in a sized pot that you won't need to transplant from before planting out. The cucurbits really hate their roots disturbed so best results are from one good sized pot.

It's possible the plant was pollinated by another variety, but I doubt it in a large commercial operation where your squash came from, so it should bear true to type.

Yes, if you sow the seeds on their side there's s'posed to be less risk of it rotting.

Here's a video of courgette seeds being sown

Out of curiosity, I just clicked into that video clip, and immediately my computer got hung up on a short repeat where it skips. Couldn't get out at all so I had to totally reboot my system. Don't know if others will have the same problem, but it's not the first, or second, time I've experienced that on some BBC clips.  :x

It told me that Internet Explorer had encountered a problem and was going to close, which it then did.
