They were using what looked like water butts or blue barrel type things so i reckon they filled them with stones and gravelat first then compost on top :?:
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

Could you use normal buckets and just put them on a bench so that they are too high for the carrot fly?

Just gonna say, i read carrot fly dont/cant go higher than 30" so doesnt matter how deep the container is just as long as the rim is above 30".

I was planning on growing carrots in my raised beds (30cm deep) am I ok to do this then?

Thanks for all your ideas.
Unfortunately i don't have room for a bath until i get my allotment. I didn't realise that you could grow them in things as small as a bucket! So i shall be on the lookout for a container to recycle, or failing that one that is cheap.

they said on big dig carrot fly doesnt fly above 300mm (12in) i hear conflicting heights.

The lowest I've ever seen quoted is by the RHS at 24". I would not believe 12".
