Strawberry's in Hanging Baskets?
growing strawberries in hanging baskets is a great idea we used to do loads of them at a nursery i used to work at that they were very popular i love the nappy idea for the gel

When planting a strawberry basket i suggest you plant three plants to give a balanced basket and watering is essential as is feeding i would recommend putting at least four of the osmocote feed tablets in each basket and still feed regularly with something like tomorite or any high potash feed to get a good crop.

As for the bird problem thats not so easy to solve with a basket the only thing i can think of is some kind of netting tent that you need to somehow get away from the basket
Everyone should grow their own veg and know where their food is coming from even if it is only a one pot on a patio or balcony Grow Something!!
