I don't know about cocoa shell availability, but my sis is into orchids and she's always uses spaghum moss which should be easier to find.

All this talk of cocoa shell is making me crave chocolate!

Naughty peeps!

No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch.

I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter.

Is coir similar? Don't know anything about orchids, but I hear it's used for growing hydroponically. I buy it online (for wormery) but it's hard to find in shops.

B & Q sell cocoa shell and I've used it for years as a mulch. Love the smell of it after rain. It doesn't seem to blow a way like wood chips do either.
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

If you have a dog you have to be careful of cocoa shell. They love ot eat it and it'll poison them. Our dog ate loads of choc at Christmas so I read up on it and apparently cocoa shell is/was one of the biggest causes of trips to the vet.

End of public information annoncement.

I expected an emergency vet visit but he visited the garden a couple of times and you wouldn't know he'd eaten anything untoward.

He has done it before one Easter but fortunately i think the choc they use is so rubbish that it contains very little cocoa.

It does poison us but we have a mechanism for lushing it through the system. Lower mammals don't.

My friend keeps Dart Frogs and uses all kinds of tropical shells in his displays.
