Brown mottled spots on comb
« on: April 04, 2008, 14:40 »
Hello,
We have recently adopted four rescued battery hens, who have all settled in well and are enjoying their new found freedom, however two of them have developed brown mottled spots on their combs, one alot more than the other.
These are our first hens and would love some advice as to what it could be as i am quite concerned although they all appear to be in good health considering!
Thank you

purple spray (called purple spray) all over her head and pray they sort it out and accept her!  :?

The purple colour puts them off pecking at her!

Mine had that to, but it soon cleared up, think they were sorting out the pecking order.  :D
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!

mail order or do you have a local pet/farm food store where they sell chicken feeds etc - you might get it there!

the girls also don't like the layers pellets! We've been mixing a handful into their mash each day, but they are just left in the feed bowl every evening. Any ideas or should we just resolve to keep them on the mash?

hahahahaha I had exactly the same problem! I was advised to starve them for 24 hours and then offer the pellets!

It worked a treat! - pellets are better for them and no food for a day wont hurt them. - also try throwing a small handful on the ground they'll go for them too.

another question then one of our hens lays eggs with a really rough sandpaper like shell! Why is it and what can we do to get smooth eggs?

She's an ex-bat and therefore past her prime.  Older girls shells are sometimes rough or wrinkly.  They often settle down again  :D

Hi, Instead of purple spray you could just get tea tree cream from boots, it works great on scabs and sores as its an antiseptic healer and the chooks dont like the taste so it stop em pecking  works great for me :D
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!
