Leggy Tomato Seedlings
« on: April 04, 2008, 12:09 »
The tomato seeds I planted have grown and are now seedlings. They have a stalk of about 2 1/2 to 3 inches with only two littles leaves at the top. They're inside next to a west facing window so get a fair amount of light.

Does anyone think they're a bit leggy or is this normal?

Tip - when using newspaper pots don't use a water soluble marker to label them!!!!

These are a bit too leggy. Try to slow them down and give the leaves a chance to grow. But when they get their first set of true leaves you can pot them on and plant them deep to give them support. Don't over water when you've done this.

Once they're ready to plant on, you can bury some of the stem with the roots. Just gently bend the stems into the hollow you make when you pot them on, roots will emerge from the excess stem that's under the compost, giving further stability for the ongoing tom plant.

To slow them down they need to be somewhere cooler, I appreciate this may not be possible.

Try & re-pot them as suggested, but I would not try & bend the stems, make a hole right to the bottom of the pot & drop the plant in that.

I keep posting this top tip but to help prevent legginess, put some aluminium foil behind the seedlings. This will reflect the light & give all round illumination & help prevent the seedlings getting drawn by the light.

Mine are in a west facing window and I've never had any problems.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have to grow indoors with no window ledges so prop seed trays up on chair arms and all sorts, so my seedlings get leggy. With toms you can pot them up and bury them up to their necks in fresh potting compost, taking care not to damage them of course. Keep the compost loose though as you don't want em squashed  :D
