it's a jungle out there and there'll always be sommat having a go at the veg. Blackbirds like to throw stuff about, but there are worse things like rats and mice, and even shrews will decimate a potato crop. I lost a whole load of Kerrs Pink  :(

Cazzy, it could be a fox just diggin around, i have one that visits regularly, can't seem to get rid of it and everytime i dig over or plant anything it has to walk over it or have a dig.  I put urine out where it comes in but it does not seem to deter it, from a bottle i hasten to add, doing it directly caused a few comments

Cawdor
Used to be indecisive, now i'm not so sure...

I'm thinking you might just have hit the nail on the head cawdor, there is a foxes den in the next plot to ours and on closer inspection today i'm fairly sure they have just been plodding over the bed as there as some pawish looking prints there too.

Suppose if they are not doing any harm i'll leave them be and try the pee approach (i'm with you on the bottle method   )
