Fence up, perch next - any ideas?
« on: April 01, 2008, 19:42 »
After a hard afternoon at the allotment, 4 hours solid in fact, we've finally put a fence up for the chooks to form a large pen. I've improvised a nest box and all that is left is to get bedding down and fit some kind of perch (oh and a door into the pen but that's in hand!)

As the set up has so far cost not a single penny, I'd like to improvise a perch, shory of nailing together 2 y-frame type contraptions and resting a piece of wood between them, I'm out of ideas. I have loads of lengths of wood, and a couple of pallets, any ideas?? I really want to collect chooks tomorrow, Thur at the latest..I can't wait

What do your chooks currently perch on?

Cool Vember! I do have some branches hanging about...might try that, the coop is a big walk in shed, so anything is possible! Cheers

I'd make sure those perches are easily removable, mite's just loves nooks and crannies to hide in, they always hide under the ends of my hens perch so I whip it off and blow torch the little devils

I've used a bit of tanonised baton (left over from the run).  two U-shaped wood assemblages are nailed to the wall at each side of the house and the perches slot into these so they're removable for cleaning.  - dead simple - not too Krypton factor I promise....

Having taken note of what everyone says on here about red mite removable seemed the best idea - & for cleaning also, but I'm sure branches are a good option too, au naturel etc

Wow, thanks for all the ideas! Well removable seems to be the way to go. The only thing with going from one side to the other is that the coop (well mansion) is 12" wide (yes for only 4 chooks!) so I'd have to find a very long branch/piece of timber...you never know have 'found' everything else so far! I could go from front to back but the layout/sloping roof may prevent. So far I think maybe a support nailed to the wall then some kind of free-standing thing.

Thanks so far!

That's why I always use screws not nails, a quick zap with the screwdriver and all undone.

I'm V obsessive with the cleaning of the coop

Good thinking Vember...my cordless would have them out in seconds!

I got so much work done this afternoon, found so many bits and bobs, put fence posts in (securely), then got the chicken wire attached, buried the skirty bit, by the end I was out of ideas!
