Question about what you do with weeds
« on: March 30, 2008, 16:25 »
My project for the next few weeks is a whole LOT of weed-clearing. What I'm wondering is: what do I do with them when I've dug them out? Make a compost heap? (Sorry if this seems a dumb question - total newbie gardener here!!)

Thanks!
Lisa

Ah - like the idea of rotting them in water and recycling the nutrients. Clever!!! Thank you!

We covered some with black plastic and killed them off. In other parts we just kept using the hoe on a hot day and leaving them to dry out on the surface. If it isn't sunny then I shake the muck off and shove the weeds in a bin liner - at least I've got em all in one place then and they aren't going to blow over the place and start growing again.

We dug up loads of couch grass root last year down one end of the plot and there does seem to be alot less of it this year.

Anuals will be composted, orrible stuff like mares/horse tail, bindweed, red shank, kids go the council to be rotted down, their heaps have a much higher heat.

Agreed, mares tail, cooch grass and dandilions ( weeds with long roots ) have to be heated at high temperatures before they can be distroyed. You should not put them in your compost bin, but, you can put it into the 'green bins' that the local council give you. They take it and heat it at about 350 0c . Other smaller surface weeds can be composted

My friend said that nettles are really good for the compost, just as well, they grow tall here and the hens won´t eat them :(
