The alpacas have arrived!
« on: March 30, 2008, 15:44 »
:)  :)  :)  :)  :)

Don't want to bore everyone but just had to tell you....

Yesterday our little troop of alpacas arrived and they're soooo cute! Hard to get anything done as we just want to watch them all day! They're so curious and are watching and following us as we fix gates and fencing. They are very scruffy at the moment, as they weren't shorn last year, so they look like huge teddy bears! Will post some photos soon as we download them.

We agreed to have the little darlings last Autumn but wanted to wait till we'd fenced etc before delivery so we've been visiting them regularly but it's so great to have them here!! Waking up this morning and looking out to see them in the garden was just amazing. They feel relaxing as they're calm, then there's those big eyes and long eyelashes. They wander round occasionally humming to each other and...no more mowing that area...so more time to watch them!!!

There is dovecote in the paddock we've just fenced for them and the doves are very flighty...don't think they believe me when I tell them that alpacas don't eat doves!! The peacocks that are free are also a little put out as their lovely open garden is now a series of small paddocks...with some big wooly creatures wandering about! Hopefully everyone will soon get used to each other!

Not yet put the hens into their new area... they too will then meet the alpacas...what will they make of each other I wonder?!!

The dream is slowly happening...just need to finish the renovation (Ha! Ha!...about another year of that...maybe longer now that the alpacas have arrived!!)

Judi...posting from "Cloud Nine"!   :)  :)

OK here are a few piccies of the new family!
There are 3 adult females (Annabelle, Pegassou and Bonheur), with 2 young at foot (Chica and Namaste) and then there's an adult male (Uno)

Think they're all here!

Will try to do more as they settle.

Excuse the stupid question - alpacas seem to be getting more and mopre popular - theres loads of the springing up round here. Is this purely for their fur? I dont think Ive ever atually seen any wool/clothing made from alpaca fur on sale - where does it go?? Maybe I just dont shop in exclusive enough places!

I have been desperately trying to source them for meat, but it seems most people in the UK keep them as pets

They make superb livestock, their meat is very strong yet tender.
As guilty as a puppy next to a pile of poo

Snozzer...EAT THEM...how could you even suggest it...?    There aren't as many over here as in the UK where they're getting really popular. Ours are primarily lawn mowers and we'll sell the young as each female has one a year, so all being well 3 babies this year. I've got a spinning wheel and hope to spin and knit with the wool...well that's the plan..if I can drag myself away from watching them that is!

Sorry Babe...little Nameste is just the sweetest baby...she hides behind mum and peeps out at us! She is nearly 5 months old and totally adorable. She even had 2 little coats to keep her warm over her first few months! She's too big for the post anyway, sorry!!

Will post more piccies as we get good ones!

Judi :)  :)
