Where have the POL's gone!!
« on: March 25, 2008, 13:26 »
After slaving hard over a run (preserved in the middle of a bloomin hailstorm, i'd started so i was darn well gonna finish!) i can't find any local suppliers!
Seems its Hugh and Jamies fault everyman and his dog wants chooks.  pah!  C
an anyone out there suggest anyone near the Yorkshire Coast (Whitby)?  The only ones I could find on here were West Yorkshire, nearly 100 miles away.....

maybe because most breeders are in the process of hatching or rearing chicks this time of year so POLs unless being produced by a larger commercial organisation, generally will not be available for a few months yet.  I must admit demand is really high for birds right now!
Try the sticky at the top for local breeders to you or a copy of "Poultry Magazine" should point you in the right direction

I must admit, we thought we'd have trouble selling those 300 Amberlinks!  Okay, it took us a few weeks, but there are only 12 in the garden, but they are all paid for and waiting to be collected,   AND we've already got 2 pre-orders for the next lot!
Shame I'm not nearer to you Newbie!!!!!

Just out of interest, how much do you expect to pay for a bog standard pol chook? Over here, they are about 7 euros, just under a fiver, so Im interested to know if the price is comparable.

Thanks
Mary.

I have been quoted a price of between 10-15 per chicken.  I hadn't really thought about bantams, mainly due to the size f the hen house, though it would more suited to larger hens.  Mst admit I love the look of the buff orpingtons, i get the feeling I am moving towards getting pets than hen keeping for eggs!!

I just picked up some brown layer hens for my next door neighbour and they were £6 each or three for £12. That is cheap compared to most round here as they were only finding them for £15 each!!!

£10-£15 for just ordinary birds, quite a lot more for anything a bit different.
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!

I'm in North Yorkshire too, and everyone recommended Malton Market. I think they have poultry once a month/fortnight. Not too far from Whitby, well closer than west Yorkshire! No doubt there'll be a livestock market even closer to you.
