Pear protection

I'm determined to beat my bumper crop of last year - 2!
Although I was speaking to the previous owners and they said that they never had any, so I'm assuming the hot April must of been good for them.

Do I need to protect the buds, they are just splitting or is it just the blossoms?

Unopened buds should be well frost hardy. Splitting and opened ones not that much, but it's tiny little frost, really should not matter much.

Do you get any pollinators, both insect and another tree wise, when all blossom is open? Pears can start very early and most of them need a second tree for good crop set.

Thanks Gobs, I have 2, side by side, so hopefully pollination should be o.k.
There were tons of small fruit on them last year but they slowly dropped off one by one, I know now I should of thinned them :roll:

I'll keep my eye on the weather forecast once the buds have opened.

Thinning flowers out has got nowt to do with productivity, in my book a complete waste of time.

If the other tree flowers at the same time , you all right, feed them potsh and mulch up thickly with manure before ground dries out. Other than that a good old prune might be in order.
