No I couldnt Bodger. Ugly as I think they are, I couldnt fatten one up knowing that I'd be stuffing it full of Paxo and opening up a jar of cranberry sauce. Could you?

No I couldn't nor wouldn't, but then I don't eat meat, I guess if I did I'd like to think I could, at least I'd know it's history then.

In my ideal world we'd only eat animals that had fallen over and died of old age

I know, that's why I laughed when I said it, they'd probably not taste that great either would they?  Mind you I was never that mad on turkey anyway, only used to like the legs, and with my 18' back garden I don't think it'd be worth it somehow!!

hi

since moving to the country we have got 12 hens and they are laying really well, we grow our own veggies now and I am now even making my own bread!!!!! (shop prices are so high) anyway we have now decided to get some meat birds raise them and then despatch them I dont feel bad about it least I know where and how they were raised and that they were free range and had a good life :)

It's our intention to raise birds and eat the cockerals, and the girls too if we get too many!

Why? Because its the only way I can be sure of having 'Happy Hens' that I know are free-range for sure!

At least they have had a good life doing what chickens do until they mature!

I take my hats off to all those who can, mine are strictly pets that give a little return for the upkeep in the form of eggs.

I've have shot (and eaten) bunnies & like fishing though can't say I like the killing aspect of it, always a little sad as I take it home for tea.

But they were "strangers" to me & still find it hard, something i'd spent a yr rearing would be much harder.

I've not eaten chicken since the HFW/JO progs, can't easily find chicken I can say without doubt has been free range.

As i've said in another thread i would happily care and raise birds for meat but someone else would have to do the killing - i might be up to the plucking but only if the heads are gone!

Softie
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

Personally I wouldn't do any eating unless I could do the killing - and therefore I wouldn't do any eating - but each to their own!!

Needless to say have just made a reasonable job of prepping a whole salmon (half price up Tesco's) and therefore feel quite justified in eating it.

If the day comes that any chickens need dispatching because of illness etc, I fortunately have a resident caveman who can do the job, and will probably eat the result (down the M.I.L.'s of course!!)
