EASTER EGG QUIZ
« on: March 20, 2008, 14:27 »
No - not the chocolate variety.

Can anyone match the chickens to the eggs? (The chickens came first   )

Clues:
Only one of the bigger hens is a pure breed.
The little one with a red head and green tail is not guilty!

Don't get too eggsited - No prizes, as i don't know the answer myself

Top right.  Maran

Bottom left. Light Sussex type. pures lay a tinted egg.

50/50 on the other two. toss a coin

The black one with the golden hackle has thrown me, I'd expect a brownish egg from it, but there isn't one to fit the bill.

That's a Bovans Nera - mid brown egg  (not one there)

Skyline (the one with no head at the drinker) - blue/green (top left)

Isn't there one that lays a golden egg?...whoops no that was a goose wasn't it?!  :)

The only one I could guess at would be the maran, top right, as they're really dark brown eggs. What lovely birds they are, I've never been keen on white birds but yours look gorgeous! In fact, I'll let you into a secret...we once said that if we could ever bring ourselves to rear some birds to eat, (as if!!), we'd get white ones as we wouldn't get attached to them...mmm, I wonder?!

The white ones are a pekin, an amberlink, and a light sussex cross. The amberlink is really friendly and inquisitive.

A couple more clues (although, as I said, I don't know for sure myself :? )

The one top left is called 'Daisy'
Check out the black one's 'hairy' legs

The black one ('Ruby') is a copper black maran cross and I think it's her that lays the chocolate brown eggs. Apparently the feathered legs are a give away :? Not sure whether the cuckoo nova (maran cross) is laying dark brown eggs too - would they be that dark?
Daisy is a marsh daisy and lays a white egg (I think the egg top left is hers)
Don't know about the other white one - could be one of the pekins (all the eggs -except the dark brown- are still quite small from the big girls!) or the amberlink. What colour eggs do they lay grannie?
Guess I'll just have to spend a morning with them and catch them at it
