What would be the latest I could hope to get some onions in?

I can't see my plot being ready for anything to go in for another 3/4 weeks yet!

I do have some on my Mums plot that I put in last Autumn (Radar I think) so I might have to make do with them!

Haven't put mine in yet. In fact T&M only delivered my red ones today (I don't use seed as I have never had any success but do well with sets).

No need to panic chickchick.................well not unless you live in Scotland!!!!!!

Get your spuds in now but plant 1/2 inch shallower.
The rod (or lugs as bitter and twisted prefer to call it) is a unit of length, equal to 5.5 yards, 11 cubits, 5.0292 metres, 16.5 feet, or 1⁄320 of a statute mile.

Onions from sets can be planted at any time between mid Feb thru to the end of April and still do well.
Onions from seed are best planted from the end Feb to the first week in April.
The earlier planting is best down south and the later up north.

But the local weather is the best indication of when to plant. If you know its going to be very cold and wet expect snow or heavy frost then wait.

The onions will very soon catch up.  There are more poor harvests because of early planting in unsuitable weather then you may think.

Potatoes even with global warming are best planted when the soil is a little warmer and the days a little longer.  Therefore its still ok to plant as late as the end of April down south and even the first week in May up north.
There are also local tradtions to consider. In some areas planting before Easter is considered a must.  But this year Easter is very early.
Then there are people who love to be the first to produce the earliest veg and take great pride in doing so.
Its up to you to decide and enjoy whatever crops you get.

You can plant as early has mid march but its often better to wait until the weather tells you,  you will not lose much real growing time.  If you are uncertain then plant some of your spuds and save some for a little later.  They will come to no harm and it may surpise you how well the later ones do.

No need to panic. If a local gardener told you it was ok to plant then more than likely he/she knew what he/she was talking about.
The local weather may be different were you are, perhaps the sun covers your plot most of the day etc.  You can not beat local knowledge. But its worth keeping a diary so that next year you will know when, why, and what you planted, and how well each veg did for you. That will help you no end next year.

If the soil is still cold wait until it warms up,your onions will still catch up with those who plant earlier.
I start my setts of in modules, before planting out in april, this way they have already got strong root growthand get away much faster than those put straight into open ground.
