Beans very impressive . Must be the wind break that keeps the birds off. Or is it glass?. Mine looked like that till the local pigeons attacked.I've only got half the double row now .Sometimes I put lettuce in  spent compost bags.
Well done ,strange allotment man .I shall have to try and get some more done in this month.

Well done Aidy,

I’ve also just planted lettuce in the cold greenhouse, as you are a neighbour (I’m from Wesham) have you planted garlic yet? I planted mine about a month ago but nothing is showing yet. This is the first time of growing garlic and just wondered how long it takes to show some life in this part of the country.

It just goes to show that it can be done in the north.

I planted onions and garlic mid October and have quite a bit of growth.

My winter lettuce are in the green house......it looks like they need to go out.  They are skinny little things so I might wait a week or two.

See you both at the Kirkham show next year maybe?

Thanks for that Tully looks like I’ll just have to be a little more patient, it’s sad but I didn’t know that Kirkham had a show, mind you this is my first year on the allotment.

my advice - keep them sheltered from the winds.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

yep, good advice from Milkman, if you notice mine are under glass but they are sutton so will only grow around 12 inches anyway so they dont need much in the way of support, you may find once the cold weather really sets in and the daylight hours keep reducing they will slow down and then will only need support next year.

We've been away for a couple of weeks - so am off down to the lottie now to check on my broad beans. I tucked them up well under some fleece before we went, but I'll have to psyche myself before I take a peek at them. Hope they're okay - they're my very first crop !!!  Will report in when I get back.
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

I peeked under that fleece and they're doing really well. Some are about 5 inches high, and where there had been gaps, the late comers are showing through. Am thrilled !!!!

Good news then jeanieblue, checked on mine this morning and they are looking a bit too good, might even get some for Christmas the way they are growing. The lettuce are coming great guns as well in greenhouse and the new tats in the bin put three inch or so of growth since last monday.

Pleased about that, Aidy.  The new allotment has been strimmed - AT LAST - so will go down later in the week and put my gooseberry bushes in. And some garlic !!    Jean
