« on: March 15, 2008, 17:50 »
Hi,
I'm looking for some cream legbars POL or older in berkshire - can anyone help? Also my speckled sussex cockerel has very long spurs on his legs, about 2 inches.....is this an indication of old age?
thanks

So I've discovered...
Any ideas  on the cockerel's spurs? Can you clip them or is it time for coq-au-vin?

Munty is the man for telling you how to remove spurs.  He does something with a hot potato

He should be around soon  :D

He's in the bath at the moment, so I will pass on what he said:-

Aunty is right about the hot potato!!!  Microwave a potato (med size) for 4minutes. Cut potato in half and put straight onto the spur.( You'll probably need someone to hold the bird for you). Keep potato in place for a while....this should soften the spur and you should be able to bend the spur off with a pair of pliers. Repeat as necessary. It should break off where it joins the leg. It might bleed, so just pop your finger over it until it stops bleeding. The cock feels no pain.
If he tries to mate with a hen with spurs that long he could easily kill her.

All you need is a hacksaw for those spurs.

Brilliant, will try the hot potato method, slightly scary as the cockerel must weigh a good 6 kilos....
Might delegate the husdand as 'chicken holder'
Would love to hear if anyone has pol legbars (as near to twyford as poss)

Catherine.

The hot potato method, will presumably take the whole of the spur off, exposing what is essentially the 'quick' from the centre of the spur.
If you'll hang fire a bit, I'll get my daughter to take pictures of me trimming the spurs on some of my chickens with the hack saw this evening.

The end of the spurs on a chicken are like your finger nails, in as much as they are dead, have no blood supply and have no feeling. Now ! Try and imagine having the whole of your finger nail removed
