HELP - They wont eat pellets!!!!!!!!!
« on: March 14, 2008, 14:04 »
My ex-batts were started off on crumb and then i mixed pellets into it gradually adding more and more but now they're on just pellets they wont eat it!!!!! in 24 hours their feeders only gone down about 1/2 cm!!!    with the crumb they would 3/4 clear the feeder in a day! (they would scatter alot around tho' . I've not given them any treats today and they're scratching like mad looking for food!!!

What should i do? Are they just being stubborn? or do they eat less pellets than crumb?

P.S. I should add that i've got 3 sacks of pellets and i'd rather not throw them out and buy crumb if there's anyway around it!
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

They'll eat them once they are hungry enough.
I'd be tempted not to feed them for one whole day and then the  following morning, feed them the pellets and I bet they scoff them like there was no tomorrow. :D

I take it they would come to no harm!!!   I might well do that then - I did it with my bunny when we switched from the museli type rubbish to pellets and it worked for him!  But he had no one to fight with

The chickens will come to know harm at all. Infact, I know of a number of poultry keepers who actually always  leave their birds without food for one day every week. If they are like me, then a few weeks fast wouldn't hurt them.

I agree with Bodger.  Give them no choice pellets or nothing.  They are not silly enough to starve themselves  :!:  :?

Our older girls had a period when they didn't touch their pellets, and I threw some on the ground and they went mad for them.  They are fine now, but they don't eat as much when the feeder is inside their house as they do when they are outside!!!

My chucks were eating pellets really well, but they don't like the latest bag (it's a differet manufacture), choosy sods.

It can be quite difficult to change them from one brand to another

I binned a half a sack of Allen and Page organic pellets that I'd been given as my hens just threw them all over the place looking for the "real" food

Our cat is like that. She had asda pouches for months but then decided she didn't like the chicken and now we have 4 chicken pouches and nothing else and she'll go hungry for a day until we buy somethign else.

But she'll eat tesco chicken.

Bit like kids really.
