Hi honeybird, no, we have not yet grown turkeys from day old, we used to get them as 4 week old growers when we lived in Essex, but we are getting 50 day olds this year to grow for Christmas!

They were a lovely strain though, best turkey I've ever tasted!!!!  I even converted a friend who said he didn't like turkey!!! lol

Well, the chicks were a week old yesterday, but weather was a bit rough to go and weigh them, so I did it this morning!

From about 40gms at day old, they are now between 80 and 100 gms!!!

You should see their wings now when they open them up!

I know what you mean Wildeone!  When I open the shed I say to them, Mummy's here!!!!  and I don't like the killing bit, and I do feel guilty, but once Brian has done the deed, they are ready for me to cook and hence they are then meat!

Like when I was talking to Freddie the cockerel last week while I was eating him!!! He didn't answer me though!

A couple phoned me last week to ask if they could come and have a chat about how to keep chickens, and to have a look at my set up here.  So I gave them as much info as I could think of, plus links to this site!!!!!  And they loved the chooks so much that they have ordered 4 of the ones that we won't be getting for another 2 weeks!!!!  And a couple of oven ready's, even though they've seen them as chicks!!!!

We are getting 12 of the meat chicks from the same place this week so it is really interesting to watch yours grow so we know what to expect.
We are going to be the other way round to you though as my other half david has said he doesnt think he will be able to kill them so it will have to be me that does it. I am going to follow munty's instructions as i dont fancy decapitating them as it seems far more messy.
Hopefully once you have done the first one it will be fine as the main worry is not doing it right/taking too long and hurting it rather than killing it quickly and cleanly.

Just go for it MD!  Do exactly as Munty said, and have confidence in yourself.  I could do it if I had to, but as Brian is willing and able, I let him get on with it!  But just do it and you'll be fine!

Its only if you dither around that it might not go to plan!  Perhaps I should have a go.  Don't want to be a wimp all my life!!!!! lol

glad to know there is at least one other poultry murderer, I mean farmer, on the pages - although it is hard when they look sooo lovely and sweet at that age.

Just think of the dinners to come.
Cheers

I´m a wimp too, when it comes to the killing :(  I asked the neighbour how she killed the hens, she said she cuts them at the back/top of their neck, at least I think that is what she said.  I asked if she pulled their necks first, no she said and made a stabbing movement to the back of her head
I watched the cookery prog. last night about Spanish cooking, shut my eyes when they killed the pig
