Laying boxes
« on: March 12, 2008, 18:30 »
Hi chaps,

Finally cleaned up the dump that is the chicken shed

Another 28 x 25kg bags of poop removed and a right good scrub. All chucks and area dusted for mites. Fubenvet arrived today so will start worming on Saturday too. Also now adding apple cider vinegar.

Anyway, the boxes where they lay the eggs, they all had a two or three inch layer of poop thats now been cleared. Prob now is that the chucks are rustling round and some of the eggs have been cracked as they are resting on the hard wood.

What should I line it with? They have straw down but they kick out most of it

I'll post some pics this weekend. of the nice clean shed

if you have a feather pillow empty the contents out in to the laying boxes or try news paper or cardboard at home when mucking out my dad would always go mad if i took to much poo out as he said it helps keep them warm so next mucking out time try leave a little bit in just put some de-lowsing powder on it then should be good to go  ......... :D

Hi cudders,
Brilliant work.

We use wood shavings, like the horse bedding.
Put some straw in last night and they're not as keen so they might actually start perching I hope !

But they all lay in the nest box without fail.

Hi Cudders, I use either horse shavings or shredded paper from my shredder (obviously).

i have used straw in the past but found that it went soggy and manky if they happened to crack an egg on it and it leaked, so have since stuck with the sawdust.

Don't forget the piccies, we like pics

Hi Gary and welcome.
Maybe you could go to the welcome bit and tell us about yourself, and possibly show us a pic of your hen house. We like to live on the edge here.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
