Bought some yesterday (they looked interesting) - when should I start chitting them and what timescales am I looking at from planting - harvest ?

I was considering planting them in a barrel, do you think this is a good idea or not ? I bought about a kilo of them

They are second earlies so you can chit them now and plant them in a month or so, unless you live in a warm place.
I'm not sure about barrels for them - but have a go and see how you get on. I'm just going to put mine out in the plot.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ohh I thought they where Main crop  :?  any way they need quite a while to mature and plenty of manure/feed to get the best from them, so I'm not sure they would do well in a container, you bought a Kilo ? about 30 tubers then ? depending on how big a container you have got you could try  2 or 3 in a container or just 1 if its not overly large.

If you have a garden, you should really plant them there. People are harvesting them late into the autumn.

we've got an allotment - i thought that bunging them in a big barrel might protect them from invading nasties, but i think we'll just shove them in a nice manurey trench in a month or so.

When I grew this variety I seemed to leave a lot in the ground at harvest time as I had loads of plants come up the following year. A nice tasting  potato though, I especially liked the way that you don't have to peel them and you can cook them whole, being a lazy person, this suited me down to the ground. :D
