Recommendation for Potato Seeds Please
« on: March 11, 2008, 07:18 »
I'm a bit late out of the gates on this one, I know, but keen to get chitting!
What varieties would you recommend and who is your preferred supplier??

Probably:
- one salad type
- one really good roaster
- one all rounder

I have a Wyvale nearby and a Dobbies but last year I ordered online form Dobies.

Thanks!
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

oooh the world's yer oyster.  I get mine from the lotty association shed generally speaking cos it saves postage and we get em at a discount. Bet there's an association near you and you don't need to have an allotment to join - they always welcome new members.

People have their own particular faves but mine are Arran Pilot
Desiree (rock hard to slugs tend to ignore em) and Picasso
Folks swear by Kestrel though oh and Charlotte
Chap near me grew Wilja and that got raves  :D
I have a few freebies of Ratte this year so looking forward to trying those
Oh and freebies of Yukon Gold
I like to try new ones each year as well as the old staples like Desiree and Picasso or Cara

Charlotte is a good salad potato and Sante is a good early main crop, neither are bothered with much so good for organic growing. I'm growing blight resistant Sharpo for main crop (only from T&M and potato fairs), but can try your local garden centre, some carry a really good range.

Our local nursery had 46 different spuds to pick from.  All loose in baskets so you could buy just as many as you wanted !!  :D

I ended up with 3 bags and 7 different sorts

predictable perhaps but would go with the following....

Early - Rocket
Salad - Charlotte - hard to beat - great for potato salads etc as hold their shape a treat
Maincrop - Dezzies for reliability, but have had success with Kestrel & Golden Wonder as well.

However, am having a go with Internation Kidney this year, aka Jersey Royal (without the seaweed) as a first early (always a risktaker  )
