If you can plant shallots 4" apart, why do the rows have to be about 9" apart? Is this just for ease of access, weeding etc?

It's just that where space is limited, could the rows be 4" apart too, for maximum yield?

You can pack shallots in a bit more than that, but don't overdo it, they need some growing space per plant.

Most spacings are based on maximum yield access etc, try staggering the planting, 4 inches apart 4inches between rows start every other row 2inches in, ok on small areas as the fiddly weeding is bearable, this is the way I do mine when space is tight

You made me smile again, Rich.

Staggered planting is actually a very good point though, you tend to get more plants into the same area that way ( clever Rich), but the picture is more like:

etc.

But the picture is not coming out as intended, so can chuckle at myself now.

What it was meant to be is plants are sort of off set in neighbouring rows, sow go in between, if that makes sense.
