The broom handle technique
« on: March 10, 2008, 13:37 »
I have been advised to use this technique for dispatching birds if i am not confident with the technique that Muntjac describes on the forum. I was also told that hand held dispatchers are next to useless. Does anyone have any experience that might help clarify these issues??
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

Surely an airgun depends on an accurate shot for a clean kill, would this be a bit hit and miss??

the hand held dispatchers are fine to use .it may be the application of it thats wrong ,,,, open the dispatcher and have someone hold the bird while you put it over the neck just below the head .squeeze the tool together hard and the job is done ... the broom handle is outdated and unless you like pulling a birds head off and having blood splatter  :  everywhere  go for one of the dispatchers

 " werks for me "  :)
still alive /............

can you recommend a particular model that you have used before. Not keen on blood everywhere. Just want an efficient way of killing a bird if it is ill or past its laying date. The vet charged £16 to put one of my hens out of its misery and it took a long time to die because they can't inject into a vein and so have to inject into the body cavity which takes some time to absorb. Can't help thinking a quick broken neck would have been better for the hen and cheaper for me.

Ya just beat me to it Munty!!!!!

We agree with munty, broom handles not good for a chicken, you would pull the head off easily, but OH has in the past used them for geese who are much tougher.  But now he has his stun gun, its much easier!!!

A friend of mine uses the Ascot manual despatchers and finds them really easy and quick. She wraps them up and has someone to help to prevent bruising of the bird. She did mention getting the right size is important and to make sure they are checked and not bent after each use.
Hope this helps!

When I needed a bird put out of its misery the vet said that they give a lethal dose of anathsthetic to do the job
