Riddle / Sieve....which one?
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:46 »
I hope to be sorting out the veg bed soon, we have quite a few stones in the soil and I've been looking online at the soil sieves/riddles.

There seems to be 2 types, plastic or wire, which would you recommend?

I would recommend the wire one, I bought a plastic one a couple of years ago and the plastic bottom cracked within a few months.

That one looks fine, mine is all plastic and it cracked between the holes for the sieve.

I've got one like that!  My friend gave it to me, but it only has the one size holes. Small!!!!    But its much better and tougher than the plastic ones Ive got, but they have slightly larger holes, so have their uses!!!!

We built ours with a scrap piece of hardware cloth (fogot its other name) sandwiched and nailed between some scrap pieces of wood. It's large enough to sit over the wheelbarrow so the 'cleaned' soil can be temporarily dumped elsewhere or to one side.
Wire every time over plastic, especially if you find broken glass and such in your soil as I do.

I really wanted an old fashioned, wooden framed one as I find the one's in most shops are too small. My brother tracked one down for my birthday and like Trillium says, it's really handy to be able to rest it on the wheelbarrow.

So mine is a wooden frame with supported wire mesh - very sturdy.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

I had a round metal one but after using it for around 30 mins or so my elbows started to ache a bit but I carried on anyway coz wanted to finish the job.  that night I was in the most excruciating agony, my elbows and wrist joints swelled up to almost double the norm and I had to take anti imflammatories for days to bring it down and it put paid to any gardening work for longer than that.  so I bought one that you turn a handle on, like this: http://shopping.kelkoo.co.uk/ss-garden-outdoor-sieve-leisure.html  (2nd one down).  no problem with sieving now and I can get through a ton more!
