first time chitter!

my spuds are happily chitting away in the window at present.  last year i didn't bother, just put them straight in the ground as they arrived late.  my question is once they've chitted, which way round do you plant them?  should the chits/tentacle things (do they have a name?) be pointed down/up/sideways/inside out???

Gosh good thing you asked, Deano.  I think I would have planted them chit down if I hadn't read this, assuming they were roots rather than stalks!

out of interest, are you self sufficient living on a small holding or growing food on your allotment?

If it's the latter, how much do you rely on what you grow?

I only have patch in the garden, which is a reasonable size for a garden but nothing the size of an allotment, so I grow what I can.

Latter unfortunately  :(

I'm on my 2nd year at this site so not very self reliant yet. Quite a few years ago we used to be able to provide all our basic vegetable needs from a plot like onions and runner beans, beetroot quite a bit of our years supply of potatoes etc , but for many years I've just had a little bit at home, now the family's getting older I have more time to get on with more serious veg growing again, 7 young kids need a lot of time  :D

they were absolutely fine.  only salad varieties - anya and charlottes - but had a bumper crop.  they went in late because Suttons took ages to deliver them.  ironically i ordered them from T&M this year and they turned up immediately.  they've been chitting now for several weeks.
