Frequently. Hence the limited brain function in evidence !!  :?

Some of the stuff we found in the old lady's shed must have originated from another dimension. It took a very large skip to clear it all.

Could they be Horsetail (marestail) fruiting bodies  :?:

Looks suspiciously like it to me Aunty  :(

Very well done, I recall those damn things!

Now, how much of a problem are they and do I need to/how should I treat them?

Many thanks.

I grow lots of bugle (self heal) in my garden for ground cover.  But I don't think the roots look much like that sharky !

What magnification is that ?

They are just invasive, not so much a problem as annoying and everywhere, but the tiniest bit of root in the ground, and they will multiply.

Hand weeding is the only cure, and when you think you've cleared an area, dig again in 3 months time and they are back again.

8)  Jodie looks spot on  :D  pain to get rid of but I'd imagine glyphosate would hurt 'em or dig out by hand    or both.

Aren't dandilions called 'pis en lit' in french - literally piss the bed as dandilion leaves have a diuretic property?

I have dug loads of the same root out of my new veg plot, but cannot for the life of me remember what was there beforehand, apart from weeds in the form of dandelions and thistles.

Will zap the whole area with Grazon well before I plant anything in it and hopefully that will kill the little blighter!

Now I'm not a genius, but to me they look like Chinese Artichokes that someone has let go wild. They are notoriously difficult to get rid off unless you harvest every last root. If I knew how to upload a picture I would send one. There are lots on Google in the images library.

They very much look like them, but Sharky  says they are hollow, are Ch A tubers hollow, Ian? First year, I'm growing, so don't know, just assumed they were not.

They are certainly similar to the mare's tail roots I have - but mine have little brown rings starting in a circular formation around the stem - maybe they are related?

If so, the roots go down to hell and if you don't want to use chemicals then you just have to keep digging and removing as you go along - oh and the * spread and spread.  On the good side they do look quite pretty and almost jurassic in nature!

On the CA note, I thought that they were more like pigs tails and a little more bulbous - but have only ever grown JA so not entirely sure...
