Females ratio to males

does anyone know what the ratio of fertile female eggs to male eggs there may be from a group of ordinary hens running with a white star cock? Or, is it just pot luck an out of 10 eggs they could all be male?

You'd kind of expect it to be 50:50, but I'm sure I recall someone saying 60:40 (infavour of the cocks, of course :roll: ) - but I don't know how true that is. It might vary by breed and time of year too.

Or did I dream all that? I do dream about chickens scarily often :shock:

Pot luck

The people who I've just picked the eggs up off have just had a brood of ten and only two were females. Thats just bad luck.

I would imagine that eventually it will even out at 50/50 but when you only breed a few each year, the law of averages may never ever even up the score.

We were lucky last time, out of 9 we only had 2 cocks.
