Sneaky hens
« on: March 01, 2008, 08:32 »
I got 6 Amberlinks about 3 or 4 weeks ago from Grannie Annie and believed we had only had 2 eggs from them so far. Not that I am bothered about the amount of eggs.  OH was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to start laying!

This morning I let them out and stood watching for a few minutes (they really are great time wasters) when one shot off across the field rosey madly, so I decided to follow her to see what all the fuss was about.

She led me straight into the builders yard next door to our field where I found not 1, not 2, not 3, but 18 perfectly formed eggs!

As they are smaller than the eggs my ex-batts lay can only assume the Amberlinks have been laying them their all week.

Well done to Bacon, Harry, Daisy, Freckles and the other two who havent done anything yet to warrant a name.

Scrambled eggs anyone?
            :D  :D  :D  :D

Forgot to mention Duckham (so called cos she went under the neighbours car and has a long streak of oil down her back)!  And 2 more eggs in the builders yard again.

Woohoo !!

Well done ot her. I was expectign big eggs but they are quite dainty aren't they.

This morning's was a little bit bigger so either a second one has started or maybe they get slighlty bigger with age.

They are very inquisitive and want to be in everything don't they ?!!  :)

They are certainly smaller than the ex-batts eggs and the shells are really hard, but they taste yummy.

Indeed they do !

We had my parents over for tea. Fresh laid eggs and mayo in the rolls.
Home grown raspberries in the trifle.
Raspberry jam in the cakes.

In a few months we'll be able to add to all that with other veg and fruit.

This is the good life !  :D

OOooooo. Yeah.

We're having one or two off Annie when they get their eaters.

Couldn't do it myself unless I had to. I'm not that hungry yet !  8)

Know what you mean.

I try to be hard on myself by the fact that if I can eat meat, I should be able to kill, prepare and cook in a humane way but so far I never have and don't actually know for sure if I could UNLESS I was in a survival situation.

Meanwhile I'm happy to let someone more skilled and less cowardly do it !

The eggs do get bigger you know!!!!! lol  Its only because they are only just beginning to lay!  We've even started getting a few double yolkers off the older girls down the bottom!!!!

But those shells really are tough aren't they?

Strange you had a wrinkled shell Rob, I've really only had them from teh ex batts, but perhpas she got disturbed or something mid-lay????

I wondered if she did a wriggle at the last minute.

Wouldn't like to pry when they're in their private chamber.    I just pop out and if there's one missing I return in 10 minutes or so.

Gotta allow them some dignity.  :?
