Hi Rotorvator we have been using horse manure for around 20 years + and although I'm not a believer in not resting the plot I going to tell you what we did with our plot so we had a problem of soil capping some years ago it was a real pain and I hadn't a clue how to overcome this problem so I askes some so called professional gardeners round here  they couldn't give me any answers so I tried several methods ending up with using horse manure together with straw

and  after a couple times of spreading a good layer of straw and horse manure  bingo no more capping it really worked cultivating the ground  its really turned the ground around for better growing so now we tend to rotate the plot using horse manure and straw  on a patch at a time and we still use granular fertilizer on our crops as well

the only down side we experienced was we seem to have a few more weeds using  horse manure but that's not a problem we can cope with those annual weeds so I hope this info is of any help RW

Best to double check:
a) has the manure and/or straw been treated with herbicide (particularly aminopyralid or another one with a similar name) - this can persist in the soil for more than a year, and has impacts on certain plants such as spuds, beans and tomatoes; and
b) does your plot tenancy agreement allow you to leave it fallow for a year? With mine, you'd get kicked off for non-gardening.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh for our council to this this proactive!

Interesting post. For the first time I'm going to keep several of my beds fallow(ish) this year having held the plot for around 18 years. That might extend to a green manure but we'll see.
