Grass seed and pigeons
« on: December 09, 2025, 10:57 »
I will be putting out some fresh grass seed (not just yet though)
Its warm enough, but far too wet
its a bare patch on my lawn
How can I stop pigeons eating the seeds ?
Do I cover it until they start sprouting?
The pigeons have been the bane of my life, they try and get ionto the feeders I have for the sparrows and blue tits, they scatter enough on the ground for the pigeons to scavage
They seeem to eat the new leaves of anything I plant
It's all about the journey, not the destination

What size is the area to be reseeded?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You might want to see if you can get garden fleece and pin it down with bricks or metal staples, perhaps?

Sorry for the late reply
Been in hospital, had a heart attack, had a stent fitted
This is about my limit at the moment
I scratched the surface, scattered some seeed, put a cscattering of soil over to cover the seeds, then watered that in, laid out the fleece, pinned it down
Sprayed it with water just settle it all down, now to leave it and hope for results
Sounds very simple but took me best part of an hour

So sorry to hear about that - it must have been such a shock!

You might not find that it does much at this time of year, but you've given it the best chance.

Take care of yourself.

Well its done now, but the rain hasnt stopped all day
At least its not as cold as it has been, still 10c outside
Maybe the grass will germinate
I feel a lot better today, but hardly 100%
Christmas is going to be interesting, grandkids are coming over

I’m glad you are feeling a bit better Pepsi.  Make sure you get time to rest over Christmas.  Difficult I know, but you need it  :)

Maybe a few days premuture
But thanks for your replies, but have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
My squirell has had his nut feeder topped up, the sun has come out today, nice and bright but no warmth in it
I'll pay a visit to the garden, feed the fish, check my solar lights and that will be it for this year
So thanks to everyone who viewed my post (s) over the past year
Be glad to see the back of this year, but at least I survived it

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone

Well that never worked, seems the grass never sprouted, but a lot of moss has grown under the fleece
I have scraped that out, put in some compost soil from my hotbin, raked it in with fresh grass seed (this stuff is supposed to be fast growing)
Grass (lawn) is still waterlogged, darent walk on it
I've scattered some lawn feed on it, that is supposed to be watered in, I'll just leave it to the rain to do that

So much rain, my ponds have started to overflow, I cant empty them, no where for the water to go, water butts are full

I can see crop prices going up this year, poor blooming farmers

To be honest, the recommendation is usually to do grass sowing in about March or September / October. It probably is still too wet and cold for it to germinate, and perhaps the fleece made the moss grow a bit more.

Anyway, fingers crossed for second time lucky  :D
