What's Your Favourite New Potato
« on: June 09, 2025, 16:39 »
Lady crystal was my favourite but I've struggled to get hold of any seed potatoes for the last couple of years without paying stupid money.
I'm just coming to the end of my Foremost new potatoes (first time I've grown them) and they have been really good and a heavy cropper. They were grown under a mini polytunnel and planted 1st March, ready in 10 weeks. I think the late April & early May warm weather helped.
Pentland Javelin are just coming ready followed by second earlies, Charlotte (not grown them before).
Chef's and the like rave about shop bought Jersey Royal's but they've never lived :D

Growing `new` potatoes , find all too quickly they get large and begin to loose their flavour. This year I chose second early charlotte which are  good and will keep their flavour for longer.
I also chose Ratte bought from Waitrose veg. section. These I am really pleased with and as a maincrop they will be lovely later as a salad potato.
So,what exactly is a `new potato`?
My description is one that scrapes easily.

A new potato to me is a 1st early potato harvested in May and June. Dug fresh from the garden, bit of a wash and scrub the the top skin off, boil and serve with a coating of butter, fresh broad beans and bacon. :nowink: :) :nowink: :)

I’ve been really pleased with the red Duke of York this year. Superb flavour and texture and ready really early which is why you choose a first early variety which takes only 10 weeks to harvest. I also grow the second early Charlotte, so hopefully they’ll be ready by the time the Red Duke of York are finished.

I’ve had some rocket & Lady Crystle from the poly tunnel, both excellent flavour bit low on the yield but that’s to be expected in there, both planted 15th March, just 1 meal left from the LC, then I’ll be starting on the outside ones, flowers on the earlier now, will check the dates I planted though first.

My favourite first early for flavour is Sharpe's Express.  Prone to blight though.

Like you I used to favour Lady Crystal but had trouble getting hold of it. Charlotte does very well for me.
