Chitting seeds
« on: March 08, 2025, 12:52 »
Advice please. I have sown some beetroot and crimson crush seeds in seeds modules (beetroot) and peat pots (tomatoes) and they are still showing no signs of emerging. I remember that last year I chitted the tomato seeds first in a plastic box on a bed of paper towels. This was successful (and also for other seeds)p but the problem I often have with chitting in boxes is some of the seeds going bad and getting covered with white fungusy fluff (particularly when chitting beans). Any ideas on how to remedy this problem please?

How long ago did you sow the seeds, and is the compost heated?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

A week ago and I brought the compost inside to warm up for a few hours.

A week may be rather optimistic for seeing seedlings through. I'd suggest waiting a while longer before writing them off completely  :)

Thanks for your replies everybody. I was being a negative apparently. Nearly all the beetroot seedlings are up and two tomato seedlings have emerged this morning.

Any advice about chitting would be appreciated.

Some seeds require special treatment to chit and germinate them. Spinach, for example, Should be soaked for half a day, drain but keep moist, put in a plastic bag or jar etc., leave in the refrigerator for 2 days. After that, plant where you want them to grow.

Take care to ensure that the paper is not too wet to avoid mould.

I do find that a lot of the white coloured beans are more prone to rotting. I sometimes soak them overnight then put in barely damp kitchen paper and keep a close eye they don't dry out.

I've struggled in recent years with mould on sweetcorn and had fairly high losses compared to several years back. I'm going to try using J-cloths for these this year to see if that makes a difference.

Don't put them somewhere too cold either.

I generally put them in a fairly sealed bag but would be interested to see what others do for this. Maybe some airflow would be beneficial.

Beans and peas, I don't bother with the paper. Put the seeds in a glass jar, add water and soak overnight (or 6 to 8 hours).

Drain.

Gently rinse and drain daily until you see a root starting to develop on several seeds. When that happens plant in the ground.

Tomato seeds....
Tried this method this year and germination was quicker than normal.

Make a cup of Chamomile tea, the tea bag is then placed in a bowl and add hot water, let it soak while you drink the tea you just made. Take the bag out and allow to cool, soak your tommy seed in the tea for around 30mins, give a little stir and any that float dispose them, the ones which sink are viable and sow them, you need them around 24c and they will pop up within a few days. The tea breaks down the coating on the seed so they germinate quicker, used it on all mine this year and very successful and to be honest the tea wasn't bad as well.
The method is on Nettles and Pettles Instagram and he was on Gardeners World the other week.
