Which vegetables do the birds not eat ?
« on: February 01, 2025, 15:43 »
Several folk at my allotment site seem to have at least 50% of their plots under netting .. i assume to prevent birds eating the plants.

Are there any vegetable plants that the birds don't touch.

Potatoes, onion, leek and spinach are the ones I can think of.

thanks

I can't remember birds eating any of my parsnips, carrots, beetroot, garlic or sweetcorn, I find if allowed they will go for brassicas, fortunately, they're always netted!

I'll add courgettes, squash and tomatoes to the list.

Hi, on our site its not just birds, squirrels and rats can also have a go plus carrots, onions, leeks, parsnips netted to keep off carrot fly etc... I net pretty much everything except spuds, beans and the plum tree (ignoring losses to plum moth) , always amazes me when I see plots on the tv left uncovered and looking beautiful, very jealous but not risking it as haven't even touched on slugs  >:( ::)

On our site birds, mainly pigeons, eat:
All members of the brassica family, cabbage, kale, psb, turnip and swede leaves
Peas
Spinach and leaf beet
Beetroot
All soft fruit - blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries,  redcurrants, blueberries, cherries.
Rats eat the grapes in our polytunnel.

The only things I don't net are onions (although they occasionally peck at them), garlic, leeks, potaroes, courgettes and beans.

I agree - I net leeks because of the leek miner, not birds!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The only vegetables that the pests can't eat are the ones that come in tins.
Give them time though and I'm sure they'll figure out how to use a tin opener  :D :D

After pepper and tomato plants have grown a bit (foot tall and a few pairs of leaves), birds do leave the plants alone, but younger than that and they do get attacked. Birds sometime peck holes in ripe tomatoes.

Birds rarely go for my spinach or lettuce.
