I’ve just received some as well.  Mine are set out to chit in the shed at home under the window and I have fleece on hand to cover them if needed.  I have done this before in the unheated greenhouse, but that is a little more risky if you get a cold snap.  They can’t get frosted.

You can either set them out to chit or leave it a while.  Chitting requires light, storage doesn’t.  They will hold in store if kept cool and dark.  You need to check them over fairly frequently to make sure none are rotting.  Some people lay them out in trays for air circulation.

I put them in seed trays if I want to store them prior to chitting.  The trays go on the shelves in the shed and I put a hessian sack over them so they do get some air circulation.  If we get a really cold few days, I chuck fleece over the top of the sack as well. You could use egg boxes if you have room, but seed trays stack.  I invariably order seed spuds, then see a good offer and order more, so space is tight

I have a garage style set of storage shelves and use the lowers ones for seed potato storage so they stay down in the dark, rather than being up and opposite the shed windows.

My shed is pretty shaded, stays cool and even when they are under the window on the big wooden shelf, I find I can set them to chit about now and they are fine.

I put them in egg boxes next to a window in a very cool spare bedroom.  That seems to work well.
I won't get my seed potatoes until mid February from our local potato day.

Great minds! 🤣

So should I put my Red Duke of York back into storage or is it ok to chit them now? They’ve been chitting for last couple of weeks- whoops, so keen!

It depends where you are chitting them. If it is in a very cool place it should be fine.

I’ve put this picture in my diary on here, but this is my set up in my shed. It is right behind the house so gets light, but not direct sun.

I usually set them out if they arrive mid Jan. Any earlier and I store them for a while. You want short stubby chits not long white ones.

I less as need that traditional in Ireland farmers planted their seed potatoes on 17th march St. Patrick’s day for good luck. I did the same and had a wonderful crop.

Some people swear by the 17th March planting date, but it makes sense to me to factor in the type of spring one has had. A very cold, wet, spring would suggest delaying planting until the soil has warmed up and dried through a bit - the spuds will catch up and less chance of rotting off.

My grandfather always sowed on Good Friday - which is a very moveable feast  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
