Deposits for council plots
« on: Yesterday at 09:58 »
Good morning all
I have received my renewal notice telling me that I need to pay £40 rent but also apparently a £150 deposit.Going to check this today but just wondering is this standard I have had my plot for over 10 years and not paid a deposit historically.
Appreciate any thoughts
Cheers HH
Keep digging

We had to pay a (refundable) deposit on our site. You get the deposit back if you hand the plot back over in a reasonable condition

When new tenants take on a plot, there is a deposit of £40 (I think). Reduced for concessions. As vikingraider says, refundable if the plot is in no worse a condition when given up / no history of warning letters. To be fair, £40 comes nowhere near the cost of getting a professional in to clear a plot, if that is (rarely) needed, but it's a start.

But £150 out of the blue, with the choice of paying it or giving up your plot, is a bit steep. Even if there are reductions for concessions. You're essentially paying nearly £200 in one swoop when you include the annual rent to be paid at the same time.

I'd perhaps think twice about contiuning at that price!

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That seems a but odd for a tenant of longstanding.  It's not as if you are about to take on a plot and they don't know how keen you will be.
We don't ask for a deposit, but rent in advance for the coming year.  We don't want to put barriers in the way of people taking up a plot by making it too expensive.
If the plot isn't worked and a tenant is evicted there is no refund of rent paid.
