hi. i have been purchasing javelot carrot seeds and i am looking to grow them in a large barrel, how many do you recommend? and what is the best feed to use and when to sow them???

They like a sandy loam. John innes No.2 mixed with sand should work. However, carrots like plenty of water so you might want to add something that will retain moisture. I'd also mix in some fish,blood and bone and some wood ash if to hand. They prefer alkali soil.
You can plant them now. I'd liberally scatter the seed, you can then thin them and use in salads etc. Cover the barrel with fleece to aid germination a keep moist. You can keep the fleece over them till harvest as this will protect from carrot fly.
