Eating curcurbit leaves
« on: September 22, 2024, 14:58 »
A colleague mentioned that he eats pumpkin leaves and declares they are "more delicious than kale" to which I replied that's not hard!

Anyhow a bit of googling confirms that I'm not going to poison myself by eating them. And they are in fact quite nutritious.

So.... in your experience what varieties give most foliage? Appreciate it's not something you've necessarily given consideration to but maybe it's better phrasing the question to which varieties have fruit hidden amongst masses of foliage?

I think they are a popular ingredient in quite a few countries, but have never tried eating them myself.

Whenever I’ve grown a heritage variety of any curcurbit they have always turned out to be big vigorous plants.  The modern varieties are generally bred to be more compact.  Probably as full sized allotment plots are not easy to find in a lot of areas and gardens in newer houses are quite small.

One of our plot holders is from Malawi.  He grows curcurbits for their leaves.  I think he grows varieties from Malawi.
He puts them in stews mainly.

Yep you can eat the leaves of summer or winter squash. Personally I'd agree with your friend. They're some of the best leaves to cook in my opinion. Just chop them up (remove any stem) and fry in a little oil and some lemon juice. The spikes go immediately.

I tried to grow some this year primarily for the leaves but the slugs both batches within days of planting out. A real dual crop.
