Keeping trailing tomatoes warm
« on: September 11, 2024, 22:26 »
This is my first year growing produce and I’ve grown trailing tomatoes in baskets as I’m still figuring out my layout. It’s gone quite well and I’ve got three successful plants, all with plenty of tomatoes that are still ripening.

I’m in the NW though and temperatures have suddenly dropped. It’s forecast to be 8-9c tonight and may get as low as 6c on Friday night. I know tomatoes like 10c or higher so I’m worried this is going to impact on my final tomatoes of the season.

Is there any way I can keep them warm? All the suggestions online seem to be for upright plants rather than trailing but I’d like to protect them if I can!

The only thig I can think of is wrapping them in fleece....
The other alternative is to pick all the tomatoes of a worthwhile size, and ripen them indoors on a window sill.

I'm going to pick all those left in my g/house,  because already had a few nights of low temps inside the g/house. It has been as low as 5C   and the plants aren't happy.

Good luck!

Tomatoes are very sensitive to low temps when planted, but I find they are pretty tough once the fruit is set and a decent size. My tomatoes keep ripening in the greenhouse well into November as long as there is not a sharp frost.
