Daft question but.......
« on: September 02, 2024, 15:13 »
What is the best salad tomato?

I know this won't be easy to answer.
So
1. Good tomato flavour.
2. Not a lot of seed.
3 not full of water.
4. Ideally heirloom but will consider F1
5. Size not important but not cherry.

Done some searching and couldn't really find the answer in the forum. This year I have Tamina, at first not bad but as the summer has gone on I fell out with it and chuck in the passata.

Just want a tom with flavour, not a lot of seed and average size.

I am looking at Ace 55 VF for next season, anyone grown them?

Therein lies the problem, everybody's taste is different, do you like toms with acidity, I do - some don't...

Also, the flavour, skin etc is always influenced by growing methods, especially the watering regime.

Did say Daft Question!  :D
Tricky as has been said everybody's tastes are different.

Perhaps.... which is your favourite salad tom and why?
I want a tomato flavour, thin skinned, meaty, average salad size tom.

I like beefsteak and ox heart type tomatoes for salad. I find what is often labelled as salad tomatoes such as Ailsa Craig for example a bit too watery with too much gel and seeds. For bigger salad tomatoes I like them meatier

that said I do love a good cherry tom in a salad which is even more seedy!

This is a sliced pink ox heart. It has about 25 seeds per tomato, in this case it was a half kilo tomato

I do like Black Russian tomatoes. Very meaty, not too many seeds. Good flavour and interesting colour.

We Like Coeur de boeuf which is a large tomato sometimes the can produce fruit with a lot of ribs. This year I grew and Italian tomato called Liguria which was excellent as well. It is large and not too disimilar to the CdB but is flat at the bottom both make excellent salads.
