Ginger ?
« on: August 29, 2024, 09:41 »
Is it possible to grow ginger in this country ?
I got a newsletter telling me it is possible
I've never even thought about growing it
It's always cheap and plentiful in the super markets (but it doesnt lok as fresh as it could be
Anyone tried it ?

My chilli's just died this year, not sure if we didnt have enough decent weather or they drowned
It's all about the journey, not the destination

I've grown ginger here in the Midlands (and I plan to again next year). It needs lots of heat and sunlight so it's a greenhouse or polytunnel plant.
You can grow it from store bought roots but they'll need a good overnight soaking as most shop ginger is treated with a growth inhibitor to stop it sprouting. Personally I buy roots from the local nursery as I don't mind the extra couple of quid knowing I'll get a more reliable crop.

Thanks, I've never seen it in a garden center or anywhere its for sale
I never knew about a growth inhibitor
I'd like to give it a try, but I don't have a breen house
But
I do have a conservatory which in the winter, it looks like a greenhouse
I use it to bring on seedlings and plants that hate the winter or cold weather

A warm conservatory will do just fine. I find it grows best in a 50/50 compost/ sand mix as doesn't like to get too soggy.

Whatever sand I have available! Normally sharp sand and I have used kid's play sand as well.
