Red russian kale
« on: August 25, 2024, 17:34 »
Firstly do cabbage whites lay on kale.
I keep finding them under the insect netting but no eggs. They clearly put a bit of effort into getting under there.
Holes in kale but they look kind of natural? First time growing.
Next do you strip out the stems before cooking.
My daughter just frys it?
Is that standard.
I assume the kale she buys from the shop is not the red russian kale which has significant stems. Of course I may have just let it grow for too long??

I was once told that cabbage whites don't like kale.

Left my kale unprotected in my front garden over winter.

It became completely skeletonised.  >:(

Clearly, nobody had told the cabbage whites that they shouldn't be eating it  :tongue2:
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Most home gardener kales have pretty significant stems which you do have to strip out. You see black kale for sale as whole leaves, but they are quite young leaves. The bags of pre-cut green kale are usually leaves stripped off the bigger stems.

You can pick kale to eat at any stage so your choice as to how to use it.

I normally fry the stems of chard and pour over some pepper sauce.
Has anyone tried frying the stems ? They are clearly significantly different. The stems on kale appear to be softer/watery.

Good point.  Can't exclude the possibility of pigeons, but I definitely saw some of the multi-legged critters too
