First earlies
« on: June 19, 2024, 10:18 »
Has anyone had a guddle yet? My Swifts have been in for 13 weeks so I thought I would see where they are at. They are miniscule  :( I guess I will leave them another 2 weeks but if they get blight meanwhile I will have no crop of any use.

My earlies didn’t go out until mid April, so I have a while to wait yet.

I do have some main crops actually flowering, but the foliage is pretty low compared to usual.  I’m hoping they settle down and actually grow something.

My mains are also flowering but I have an enormous amount of foliage this year; I have never seen such tall potato plants. I am worried that this may mean a poor crop. I dont know whether it is the weather or the fact that I have used a different fertilizer this year, Vitax organic potato fertilizer. I cant see on the packaging how much nitrogen this contains.

Results so far: -
Arran Pilot planted 1st February in tubs in the greenhouse. Waste of time after 90 days.
Arran Pilot planted 1st March in a raised bed covered with plastic (mini tunnel). Great crop after 90 days.
Pentland Javelin planted 1st April in a raised bed. Currently in flower and expecting a good crop after 90 days (early July).
Blight is always a problem for me in July / August. Trying Sarpo Mira main crop for the first time so we will see how they go. There meant to be Blight resistant!
I always say I'm not planting or sowing anything until March but it never works out. I think we will go on holiday next February and that will sort that out :D

Been eating my red Duke of York from tubs I planted up in the greenhouse in early March since 26th May and just started on the ones planted on the plot on 11th April. Decent crops so far.

Dug up my first lot of 'Pentland Javelin' last weekend - just 12 weeks from planting and flowers were fully open. Got 4 adult servings from a single plant, going back for more this weekend!  :D

I grow mine (Swift) in 'those' 30 litre containers.
First & second containers produced a disappointing 1.5kg each from 4 seed potatoes, with the 3rd & 4th even worse at 2.4kg from both.
Previous years have seen an average of 2kg per container.
Only difference is I used some much touted "organic potato fertiliser" in the tubs, rather than Growmore.
Containers are filled with a 50/50 mix of home made compost & cheap commercial, with a good two handfuls of fertiliser added.
Taste is excellent & they're cooking better than last year's, which I thinks suffered due to the heatwave.

Mine were "rocket" they taste earthy and fresh, supermarket ones don't taste nearly as good. I don't grow main crops as there is a potato farm close to me so I pick up 25kg sacks of golden wonder from them for £14 and I don't think there's much difference in flavour between homegrown main crops and commercial ones, unlike earlies. Main crops also take up a lot of space for the whole season, whereas with earlies I can grow leeks or salads or psb etc after them

I grew Jazzy in 35ltr buckets with 50/50 mix with a good handful of spuds galore fertiliser added for good measure. Last year I grew the same but neglected to water them as much as I should have, but we still got a decent crop with some good size potatoes!
This year I've watered much more regularly and tended with loving care including bed time stories and being tucked in at night
For whatever reason (maybe the latter) I've had dozens of very small, some pea sized potatoes this year, still very tasty, but I'm disappointed with the size of crop from the first 2 buckets! I've another 5 or 6 buckets to harvest, all sown on 3rd March in exactly the same way, I'm hoping after nearly 17 weeks, I should get a bigger crop, fingers crossed!

I'm the same. Huge amount of foliage from my Maris Piper and King Edwards. Never seem them so tall and bushy.  I've not fed them anything.  Hoping this is a sign of a good crop, but you just never know!!

Not bad that Aidy. I planted my Charlottes 30th of April and thought I had to give it another few weeks

Charlottes planted mid- soggy April in impatience. Thought the ground was too wet. Very low, sparse foliage. Wasn't hopeful. Now some plants are dying back so I dug one up to look. A modest haul of whoppers and tiddlers.

Banana for scale. I did not grow bananas  :D
