planting into loo rolls?
« on: February 26, 2008, 10:16 »
hi everyone, ive been having a read of the forum and ive often heard people mention planting into loo rolls so that roots dont get disturbed.

i know this is a silly question but whats the best way to do this for stuff like carrots, beetroot etc?

cheers

carrots and beetroots can be grown from seed sown directly where you want them to grow.  broad beans and brassicas are often sown undercover in seed trays and bog rolls etc to get em going early and then they get planted out when bigger and have a better chance of survival
I'd get a good book from the library which explains it all - Joy Larkom veg handbook is great

Generally bigger seeds are sown in loo rolls, eg broad beans, sweet peas, beans and sweetcorn, courgettes then when they;'re nice chunky and got plenty of roots the whole thing gets planted out into the garden or lotty soil

the only problem with bog rolls is they will go mouldy, this is down to the glue they use.

I,m using loo rolls for the first time this year (parsnips) and as Aidy has all ready stated they are going a little mouldy, I hope this dosn,t harm the plants. I have thought about spraying the loo roll with a little diluted jeyes, but am not so sure.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

I tried all sorts but they still went funny so dont bother now, there are loads of pots around and I use them, put a message on freecycle, you will be suprised how many ppl keep them and give them to you.

I use bog rolls and they don't always get mould on them but I don't know if it's to do with how wet they get or the make of loo roll or what you plant in them. I've got sweetpeas and beans in them at the moment and no mould
