Good afternoon everyone, 
I'm thinking of taking some blackcurrant cuttings but all my serches say they must be 6" - 8" long and the thickness of a pencil". Can they be any thinner?

That will be the optimum to get a good percentage of cuttings to strike and grow roots.  I have not done blackcurrant cuttings for years, but when I did it was from a couple of branches pruned by a fellow plot holder.

I made a slit trench, chucked some sand in the base and put in as many cuttings as I could get out of those 2 branches.  I am sure some were thinner than recommended, but most of them took. I would have a go with what you have and see what happens.  It is very little work and if you are pruning anyway, nothing much to lose.

An old boy I knew, used to use all the prunings from his currants as row markers, so that the end of the season, he had a load more bushes to plant out!

This year, I've hoiked all our old blackcurrants out, taken cuttings - some pretty thin, and just placed them in a large pot of compost sat in a water tray. They seem to be taking...
