Courgette Varieties?
« on: November 09, 2023, 12:46 »
It's that time of year again - when a cuppa & a seed catalogue by the fire seems more tempting than being outside.  :D

I can't grow courgettes outdoors here so I need a self pollinating variety .

I've had a lot of success with "Partenon F1" in previous years but none of the places I usually buy from seem to be getting any in.
I'm reluctant to use Thompson & Morgan because of customer service issues but if anyone raves about their "Sure Thing" courgettes I might slum it this once.

Does anyone have other recommendations?

Thanks, Windy.

I'm in glasgow and the most productive is Defender F1. Yellow and heirloom varieties are nowhere near as productive but I don't mind that given how much a few plants can produce when we get a bit of decent weather.

I don't know if it's self pollinating though, I grow them outdoors

Just had a look in my seed tin my current pack is just called zucchini from mr fothergill’s . I should confess I have a very sophisticated approach to buying seeds normally looking to see what are being sold off at the end of the season at my local garden centre. Not parsnips though of course.
I would support Snow with his comments about yellow courgettes nothing like as good as the green ones.

An outfit called dutchgardenseeds.co.uk seems to have Partenon F1.

Caveat emptor, I have never done business with this company.

I'm not 100% Sp, but don't think we can legally buy seeds direct from the EU any more

I thought since the web address had UK in it, that outfit might legally sell in the UK as well(?). Their shipping information seems to indicate that they do (rate might be OK for a large order, steep for just a packet or two). I have no idea what UK customs and agriculture departments might think of it though.

I have grown Striato di Napoli for several years with much success.  It is widely available.  Romanesco also very reliable.
Yet to be really impressed with a yellow variety.   They are all OK but none are very productive.

The most prolific courgette plant I've ever grown was called Black Beauty.. we had dozens from just one plant.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. :D

I am specifically looking for something that does well in a polytunnel.
I've seen "Sure Thing" at King's seeds now too but they have dearer delivery for seeds to my address than T&M (£5.45 vs £2.99).
Next time it rains & the fire's lit I'm going to have a look at whether either of them have other things I want.

I grew 'Gold Rush' this year, which was bought from a GC. Got 34 courgettes off that 1 plant
