can anyone recomend a good spud for growing in tubs [they vary 55-70 litre] main crop preferable but could be earlies. we grew Desiree and Cara this year both did not do great. thanks in advance

I think that's down to the weather, this year, as Cara was the heaviest yielder for me, last year.

Why do you prefer maincrop? Is it because they grow larger, or tend to be more floury (easier to mash / roast)?

I grow Charlotte in 35ltr buckets and I've had a canny crop this year.. I would imagine any maincrop potato would do OK in large buckets as long as there's not too many seed potatoes planted in each one as they will need more room to grow!

maincrop mostly for storing  normally 3 seeds per 55-70 litre tub 15 tubs i think if i go down the early road i would need to stagger the planting as they dont seem to store well  probably some of each makes sense  thanks for the replies.

I tried pots in tubs this year and was really pleased with the result. I used Foremost in those big black plastic tubs and used about 6-9 per tub planted in two layers then back-filled with soil plus grass clippings on top. They weren't as waxy as I would like so going to try a different one next year.

I grow Setanta for maincrop as they make gorgeous roast potatoes. Might also be worth considering Jazzy. They are good croppers and the foliage isn't as tall so good for containers but what I most like is their versatility. You can pick them as earlies or leave them to become mains! The tubers are very bllght resistant and if you have problems with storage you can leave them in the ground .
